How can you confidently speak up during meetings? Speaking up confidently during meetings is a challenge for many emerging leaders, especially if they’re a young professional, a woman, or more on the introverted side. But for advancement into leadership, it’s critical that others hear your ideas and opinions in meetings so you need to speak up! This episode is dedicated to helping you do this.
I begin this episode by talking about the three groups of people who generally have difficulty speaking up in meetings, then I share with you three practical techniques that you should use to speak up more confidently in meetings.
These techniques are powerful. My clients have used them and have found them very effective.
If you’re an emerging leader who has difficulty speaking up in meetings and getting your voice heard, this episode is for you!
How to communicate confidently in meetings?
In Episode 18, 3 Ways to Communicate Confidently and Show-Up Powerfully in Meetings, you will learn:
- Who finds it difficult to communicate confidently and speak up in meetings.
- Why young professionals, women, and introverted men find it hard to speak up in meetings.
- How investing time in pre-meetings can help boost your presence during the actual meeting.
- What to do if you have a partly-constructed idea and how you can share this idea with confidence (sentence structure included below).
- How asking for input from others in the room can generate support for your ideas (sentence structure included below).
Techniques to Communicate Confidently In Meetings
Technique 1: How to Put Forth a Partly Constructed Idea:
One of the topics I talked about was how to share partly constructed ideas during a meeting. Here is the technique I shared with you:
- Say, “I have an idea that I’d like to share with everybody. It’s still an idea in progress but with your input, I think we can get some clarity on it”.
- Announce your idea.
Technique 2: How to Ask for Input on Your Idea:
Another technique I shared with you in this episode was how to ask for input from others in the room on your idea. You cannot lead in a vacuum, so it’s critical that you get input from others. Here’s how you do it:
- Put forth your idea.
- Ask, “What do you all think about this idea?” or “What are your thoughts on this idea?”
- Pause and wait for their responses.
These two techniques are very effective to help you speak up more confidently and powerfully in meetings. I hope they help you!
